For some reason when I was a kid, I really really really wanted to see Alien and Aliens back to back, but I knew that it would freak me the fuck out and give me nightmares of shit bursting out of my chest and whatnot. So I found a weird ass compromise. I turned the sound off and the subtitles on. I mean, the scariest parts of movies are the noises, right? Hearing a man scream in blood curdling agony is way scarier than seeing the text [man screaming like a girl] at the bottom of the screen. I furthered my cinematic compromise by wearing headphones playing the happiest music I was into at that point in my life: The Violent Femmes. It was like watching Wizard of Oz and listening to Dark Side of the Moon, only weirder, especially when Ripley blew the Alien out the airlock right as Gordan Gano started singing “Out the Window.” True story. Of course, it didn’t work. Now, when I hear “Kiss Off” I imagine the Alien’s second mouth snapping at Ripley. Good times.
