So... the first time I saw Fight Club, I thought it was a herald for something. A sort of harbinger of madness and an end to ennui. I thought people would be baptized in the sweat of a fight and it would wash away their apathy.
And then nothing happened. If anyone actually tried to live out Project Mayhem, I never heard about it. I have heard, by the way, of some people planning on doing something in 2012, but that seems an awfully long time to wait for... I don't know what. Their website features a countdown with over five hundred days left.
But more to the point, I think fictional super heroics have the real potential to emasculate the world. Rather than daring greatly in real life, people can vicariously watch someone on the big screen do it. So, when I heard about people acting as real life super heroes in Seattle, a part of me thought it was ridiculous, but most of me was genuinely inspired. Rather than voyeuristically reading comics, these guys were out there trying to improve the world, and there's something pretty damn admirable about that.
